I am ecstatic. Fall is upon us! Bring on the sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes, changing leaves, and cute kiddos in Halloween costumes. It always goes by so quickly, but I look forward to it every year.
There are some bold new fashion trends to look forward to this season as well. However, if you've been following this blog, you probably know that I don't believe in spending a lot of money on trendy clothing. That doesn't mean you can't have a little fun with it though!
With trends, I generally recommend keeping a tight hold on your wallet. Feel free to explore and experiment, but limit your purchases to just a couple of pieces that can mix and match with clothes you already own. Updating old clothes with some simple DIY tricks can be a great way to freshen things up as well! Be selective, be strategic, and only buy if it fits well and is 100% YOU.
Below I've outlined five of this season's key trends, as well as some simple and inexpensive ways to try them out, if your heart so desires.
THE TREND | FRINGE
TRY IT OUT
- Hit up your local fabric store and purchase a few yards of inexpensive fringe trim, which you can add to one or two pieces that you already own for an updated look (I'll be posting a DIY tutorial next week!)
- In need of some new fall footwear? There are some cute fringed boots and booties out there right now, many in suede and faux suede (which is also getting its moment in the fashion spotlight, btw). And if you have an older pair of shoes that just needs some sprucing up, you could try out this nifty DIY tutorial.
- Fringe necklaces and statement earrings are everywhere right now, and jewelry continues to be my favorite easy way to update my look. Search for unique pieces with interesting elements and details.
THE TREND | MILITARY
TRY IT OUT
- This trend is certainly not new, but it's still very relevant in fashion. If you're feeling the DIY, I have one word for you: buttons! A couple of bucks will get you some military-inspired buttons from a craft store, which you can sew onto jackets, cardigans, skirts, pants, etc. The thing I love about buttons is that you can always switch them out again when they go out of style or you get sick of them!
THE TREND | VICTORIAN
TRY IT OUT
- First of all, be sure to dig out those lacy tops hiding in the back of your closet. They'll look very sophisticated layered with suede and leather textures this fall.
- My latest fixation : a velvet blazer. If you choose well, you could use it as a completer piece for so many classic outfits!
THE TREND | THE SKINNY SCARF
TRY IT OUT
- While big, warm scarves will never go out of style in Minnesota thanks to our bitter winters, a sleeker (albeit somewhat less practical) scarf has been surfacing. If you purchase (or make!) one of these modern accessories in a neutral color, you'll have an easy way to update any number of classic fall outfits.
- A similar look seen all over the runways is the pussy bow blouse. The neck decoration makes this type of top a fun layering piece.
THE TREND | THE JUMPSUIT
TRY IT OUT
- Fake it! You don't have to spend a dime when it comes to this trend. Sure, you could go out and buy a jumpsuit if you really want to, but it's so easy to just take a top and a bottom in the same or similar color (black is a really easy option for this) and pair them together for that sleek, monochromatic look. To pull the whole ensemble together, add some statement jewelry or a bold completer piece for a bit of contrast.
